Mother Nature wreaks havoc on area football
With four games, including Hylton at Gar-Field, already postponed until Saturday due to Thursday’s rain, several more Prince William and Stafford area football games were called off amidst a tornado warning on Friday night.
In Dumfries, as Potomac’s players were ascending the walkway to their field to play visiting Osbourn, the announcement came over the PA system, just seven minutes before game time.
“We have a weather advisory. All participants are advised to go to their cars,” said the announcer. “The game is canceled. Please go!”
Potomac Activities Director Frank Higgins said the game is rescheduled for tonight at 7:30 p.m.
At Woodbridge, the Vikings’ contest with Forest Park was called off 10 minutes before game time. Osbourn Park, which hosted its homecoming tonight, delayed its kickoff with Stonewall Jackson until about 8:15 p.m., but played its game. The Yellow Jackets won 28-6.
In other games that went on as scheduled, Group AA James Monroe defeated Group A Brentsville 21-7. Stafford also played at Spotsylvania on Friday night.
Woodbridge AD Greg Margheim said late Friday night that the Vikings-Bruins game was tentatively set for tonight at 7:30. Margheim said he would not know until 8 a.m. Saturday whether or not there were enough officials available to work the game. If there are not, the game will be played at 6 p.m. on Monday.
Woodbridge did announce that tickets purchased on Friday night would be honored on Saturday.
No injuries or significant damage from the storm was reported on Friday evening. According to the Weather Channel, the severe weather threat for the area expired at 7:49 p.m.
As of Friday afternoon several games, including No. 1 Gar-Field vs. No. 2 Hylton and 4-0 Manassas Park against defending Division 2 state champion Washington & Lee-Montross, were postponed until tonight at 7:30 p.m.
On Friday afternoon, Courtland at Brooke Point was moved to today at 11 a.m. and Chancellor at Colonial Forge was postponed until tonight at 7:30 p.m.
