Manassas Journal Messenger | Supervisors to hear strategic plan review

The Prince William Board of County Supervisors will hear a couple of presentations and a Virginia Department of Transportation monthly report at the next board meeting at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the McCoart Government Center.

In 1988, supervisors appointed a Future Commission to predict the state of the county in 2010.

The commission’s findings gave supervisors guidelines they could follow.

The commission consisted of 15 appointees and another 17 who served on issue groups.

The 32 volunteer citizens were charged with conducting surveys, running focus groups and holding meetings.

In 1990, the commission wrote a report and presented it to supervisors.

The report stated in part that, by 2010, the federal government, major metropolitan and national employers will have moved to the county. The county would contain a mixture of housing for a wide diversity of people.

The report also said that historic preservation sites would include the Brentsville Courthouse, Ben Lomond Manor House, Beverly Mill and Rippon Lodge.

By 2010, the county would have cross-county highways and an intra-county bus system.

According to the report, families in 2010 would be able to choose schools that best fit their children’s learning. Schools would offer speciality classes such as foreign language immersion or science.

The county staff will ask the board to consider appointing a new Future Commission to set goals for 2030.

The board will also hear a strategic plan review from the county executive’s office.

Elements of the strategic plan include the beautification and clean-up of targeted communities, protection of cultural resources, preservation and rehabilitation of historic resources and the enhancement of environmental protection efforts.

The Virginia Department of Transportation briefing will update the supervisors on the progress of VDOT projects at the Occoquan River Bridge, Va. 234 between Snowfall Road and Eclipse Drive, the Gallerher Road rail crossing, the Interstate 66 HOV extension between Va 234 business and the Va. 234 bypass among others.
