Despite some lingering concerns about traffic congestion, supervisors approved a new housing and office development south of Haymarket.
At their Tuesday meeting, the Board of County Supervisors rezoned 25.2 acres for the construction of a new office and housing development on the north side of U.S. 29 near U.S. 15.
Supervisors changed the zoning designation of the land to “planned mixed-use” from “agricultural and general business.”
Nearly three-quarters of the 25.2 acre site will be devoted to 170,000 square feet of office space, with the rest of the site slated for up to 25 single family homes.
Wally Covington, R-Brentsville, whose district the land is in, said the addition of a turning lane from U.S. 29 and a connecting road to an adjacent development were enough to ease his concerns about traffic.
The development’s relatively small size also helped.
“Our project is a teaspoon in an ocean of traffic,” said John McBride, who presented the project on behalf of landowners Rodney and Cora Stringer.
However, despite assurances about traffic, supervisor John Stirrup, R-Gainesville, still voted against the plan.
Stirrup said the project seemed fine on its merits but he was worried about approving any new development in the area until overall transportation problems are addressed.
Stirrup’s vote was the only one against the plan.
