Storage units broken into, robbed in Gainesville

At least two storage units were broken into during a burglary at a Public Storage facility near the intersection of Interstate 66 and Va. 234 just north of Gainesville, according to police, with items worth more than $7,000 stolen.

Burglars cut a hole in a chain link fence at the back of the facility on 10305 Balls Ford Road near Gainesville around 11:30 a.m. Sunday, police said. Once inside, they cut the locks off at least two storage facilities, but police expect more reports to come in.

The Associated Press reported that a storage facility in Laurel, Md., was robbed Sunday and Monday. Over 300 storage units were broken into.

In the facility on Balls Ford Road, a concrete saw, nail gun, welder and remote control truck worth $6,300 was stolen from one unit, while a set of golf clubs, bag, golf shoes, tennis racket, ski clothes and ski boots worth $1,400 were stolen from the other unit.

Calls to the storage facility seeking comment were not returned.
