By this date, President nominates nine members to the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission, commonly known as the BRAC Commission.
March-April 2005
Senate holds confirmation hearings for the BRAC Commission nominees. Commission staff gets organized.
May 16, 2005
By this date, the Defense Secretary must recommend military bases for closure or realignment. This the date when communities will find out if their base is on the “BRAC List.”
June-August, 2005
BRAC Commission holds hearings and base visits to determine bases to close or realign.
July 1, 2005
Government Accountability Office completes assessment of the Pentagon’s base closure recommendations and sends report to Congress.
Sept. 8, 2005
By this date, the BRAC Commission makes final decision on bases and sends report to President.
Sept. 23, 2005
Deadline for President to approve or disapprove Commission’s decision. If approved, the Commission’s decision becomes final in 45 “legislative” days unless Congress passes disapproval resolution.
Oct. 20, 2005
If President disapproves closure list, BRAC Commission has until this date to submit revised recommendations.
Nov. 7, 2005
President approves the Commission’s latest recommendations or the BRAC process stops and no bases are closed or realigned.
April 15, 2006
BRAC Commission terminates all business.
