SPELLING BEE RESULTS

Determination beats all

Congratulations to Lizzie and all the students who participated in the 2006 Richmond Times-Dispatch Spelling Bee.

History

The Richmond News Leader sponsored local spelling bees from 1922 to 1945.

The first modern Richmond Newspapers bee took place in 1975, sponsored

by The News Leader, with seven participating divisions.

In 1992, the winner

of the Richmond bee, eighth-grader Amanda Goad, won the Scripps Howard

National Bee.

Shortly after Amanda’s win at the national bee, The News Leader

merged with the Richmond Times-Dispatch. The Times-Dispatch has sponsored

the Richmond bee since 1993.

Structure

To reach the regional bee, a student would typically progress through

spelling bees in this order: classroom, grade level, school, division.

The Richmond bee champion continues on to the Scripps

National Bee.

Eligibility

Students must be in one of the divisions listed above. For other eligibility

requirements, please see rule 1 of the Scripps Suggested

Rules for Local Spelling Bees. The Times-Dispatch does not set a

minimum age or grade level requirement. However, schools and divisions may have

minimum age or grade level requirements. Questions regarding eligibility

in division or school bees should be directed to local school officials.

Rules

The Richmond regional bee uses the Scripps Suggested

Rules for Local Spelling Bees. The regional bee uses option A of

rule 13. School and division bees may use either option A or B. Questions

about rules in division or school bees should be directed to local school

officials.
