Manassas Journal Messenger | Two die in construction accident

A 35-year-old Woodbridge man and his co-worker died Thursday when the construction lift they were on toppled at 11:05 a.m., Fairfax County police said Saturday.

Peter Sundholm, of 12423 Hedges Run Drive, and Joseph Vacca, 19, of 14411 Tracy Shar Lane in Centreville, were painting at the Chantilly Country Club when the lift, commonly referred to as a “cherry picker,” tipped. Both men fell to the ground and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Fairfax police would not comment on what caused the lift to tip, saying only that the case is still under investigation. Police are waiting for Occupational Safety and Health Administration officials to complete their investigation, according to Officer William Walker, Fairfax police spokesman. Foul play has been ruled out, Walker said.

Walker was not sure how high the lift was.

Sundholm and Vacca were employees of the Cara Construction Company working at the Chantilly Country Club.

The line for Cara Construction rang busy Monday afternoon. Country club officials did not immediately return calls from the Potomac News and Manassas Journal Messenger.
