Earl S. Cox

The Rev. Earl S. Cox, 86, of Fredericksburg, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at Mary Washington Hospital.

Born in North Carolina, he was a retired Baptist minister. He was a member of Fredericksburg Baptist Church, former pastor of Winfree Memorial Baptist Church in Midlothian, and former associate pastor of Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church in Richmond. He retired from Colonial Beach Baptist Church after 15 years of service, where the new church was built under his leadership. After his retirement, he founded the Potomac Fence Co. He was also a member of the Portsmouth Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years.

He is survived by his wife, Lula Cox; two sons, Irvin E. Cox of Charlottesville and Donald E. Cox of Fredericksburg; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Fredericksburg Baptist Church, with Dr. J. Larry Haun and the Rev. J. Howard Cates officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Michael D. Kane

Michael D. Kane, 38, of Midlothian, formerly of Stafford, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at Chippenham Medical Center.

Born in Clemens, Mich., he was a civil engineer for Talbert and Broght in Richmond. He was a Stafford High School graduate and a graduate of Virginia Tech. He was a registered professional engineer and a member of the following organizations: National Society of Professional Engineers; American Institute of Certified Planners; American Concrete Institute; American Concrete Pavement Association; and the National Fire Protection Association. He was an instrument-rated pilot and a member of the Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association.

He is survived by his wife, Irene S. Kane of Midlothian; one son, Zachary A. Kane of Midlothian; two daughters, Haley A. Kane and Greer A. Kane, both of Midlothian; his parents, Lee D. and Barbara S. Kane; two sisters, Laura A. Daniels and Marribeth A. Thorpe, both of Spotsylvania; his maternal grandfather, John F. Spillman of Spotsylvania; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel. A funeral Mass will be offered at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Matthews Catholic Church, the Rev. David P. Meng officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mary E. Sears

Mary Elizabeth Sears, 85, of Fredericksburg, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at Mary Washington Hospital.

Born in Hertford, N.C., she was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Burfoot M. Sears.

She is survived by one son, Raymond A. Sears of Lanham, Md.; two daughters, Hilda I. Dixon of Woodbridge and Faye M. Benjamin of Fredericksburg; four brothers, John Perry of Newport News, Charles Perry of Portsmouth, Jack Perry of Anchorage, Alaska, and Louis Perry of Crossville, Tenn.; three sisters, Anne Holleman of Little Rock, Ark., Ellen Hutson of Newport News and Eva Howard of Portsmouth; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Sturtevant Funeral Home in Portsmouth, the Rev. Bates officiating. Interment will follow at Olive Branch Cemetery, Portsmouth.
