William C. Cunningham Jr.

William Curtis Cunningham Jr., 56, of Bristol, Tenn., formerly of Triangle, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at his home.

He was born in Smithfield, N.C., and lived most of his life in Northern Virginia. He was the son of the late Guy and Essie Geraldine Weatherholtz of Front Royal. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the International Elevator Constructors Union Local No. 10 of the Washington, D.C., metro area. He served two tours in the Vietnam War, where he received two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. He was of the Protestant faith.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Ann Dillard Cunningham of Bristol, Tenn.; one daughter, Kimberly Ann Smith of Leesburg; two stepsons, Gary Wayne Boardwine of Powhatan and Christopher Wade Boardwine of Alexandria; one stepdaughter, Kimberly Shann Coeburn of Woodbridge; one brother, Ricky Weatherholtz of Front Royal; and four grandchildren, Melanie Jane Cunningham and Krystle Nicole Wood, both of Leesburg, and Kerri Ellen Boardwine and Joshua Todd Boardwine, both of Powhatan.

Funeral services were conducted at 8 p.m. Monday at the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel, 630 Locust St., Bristol, Tenn., with the Rev. Donnie Shaffer officiating. Interment will be at 1 p.m. today at the VA National Cemetery with full military honors, conducted by V.F.W. Patton Crosswhite Post No. 6975. There will be a processional leaving at 12:15 p.m. today from the funeral home to the cemetery. The family wishes to express thanks to Dr. Ala Mortazavi and the staff of the intensive care unit at Potomac Hospital, Woodbridge, and the staff at Wellmont Hospice House, Bristol, Tenn., and a very special thanks to Shelly Seats, L.P.N. of Bristol for her compassionate private-duty care.

Charles H. Eckardt

Charles Henry Eckardt, 64, of Gainesville, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at his home.

Eckardt was born March 7, 1937, in Front Royal. He was a retired plumber and past employee with Home Depot. He was a member of the Warrenton Moose Lodge.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Mamai Eckardt and his parents, Charles H. Eckardt Sr. and Hazel Baggarly Mitchell Kephart.

Survivors include a daughter, Teresa Jean Eckardt Grove of Marbury, Md.; one grandson of Marbury; two stepgrandchildren of Remington; and his fiance, Delores Ball of Warrenton.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Maddox Funeral Home Inc., 105 West Main St., Front Royal, where services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. with The Rev. Jerry Young officiating.

Burial will follow at Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Malcolm E. Empey

Malcolm E. Empey, 61, of Manassas Park, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, in Orange County, Calif.

Survivors include his wife, Samuella C. Empey; one son, John Myles Empey of California; two brothers, James C. Empey, of New York and Myles C. Empey of New Hampshire; three sisters, Barbara J. Prat and Karen Ann Hannigan, both of Massachusetts, and Betty Jean Kennedy of Texas.

A memorial service will be held 6 p.m. today at Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center St., Manassas. Inurement will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery, S. Kingston, R.I.

William B. Hawkins

William Bryant Hawkins, 78, of Manassas, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at Annaburg Manor in Manassas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Elizabeth (ne Mozingo) Hawkins; and one son, William C. Hawkins.

He is survived by his wife, Bobbie Hawkins; two sons, Rodney Lee Hawkins of Manassas and James Steven Hawkins of Richmond; one sister, Vivian Davis of Manassas; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Callis of Glen Allen and William Lee Hawkins of Richmond; and one great-grandchild, Mary Elizabeth Callis of Glen Allen.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Blasius-Baker Funeral Home, 9320 West St., Manassas. A funeral service will be conducted graveside at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Stonewall Memory Gardens.

Kevin W. Loughman

Kevin Ward Loughman, 54, of Manassas, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at Inova Fairfax Hospital, Falls Church.

He was a Vietnam veteran, serving with the 173rd Airborne. Born in Boston, he lived in Cape Cod, Mass., prior to moving to Virginia.

Survivors include his two daughters, Julia F. Jewett of New York and Jacqueline C. Loughman of Saugas, Mass.; two sons, Derek W. Loughman of Cape Cod and Daniel F. Loughman of Saugas; his significant other, Sheryl Irwin; her son, William R. Irwin of Virginia and his two children; two sisters, Kathleen Grenier and Denise Feighery; and one brother, Brian Loughman.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center St., Manassas. Graveside services will be held Friday at Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit, Mass.

Ward S. Miller

Ward Samuel Pop Miller, 90, of Manassas Park, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Oak Springs, Warrenton.

He was born Oct. 31, 1911, in Nokesville, the son of the late William Stuart and Pearl Cupp Miller. He was raised in the Shenandoah Valley, Dayton area. He farmed in Lima, Ohio, from 1937 to 1953 and in the Shenandoah Valley from 1953 to 1960. He was a member of Manassas Church of the Brethren, where he was manager/player of the church softball team. He was the caretaker of the church cemetery, Cannon branch, until 1999. he retired from Southern States after 15 years of service and worked at the Bull Run Exxon in Gainesville for many years.

He was preceded in death by one son, Steven Miller, who died in 1984.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Ida M. Miller; four children, William Lee Miller of Culpeper, Gary Miller of Manassas, Jane Lynn Wilson of Sterling and Sam Miller of Orange County; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center St., Manassas. The funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 9:45 a.m. Thursday for graveside services at 10 a.m. at Cannon Branch Cemetery, Manassas. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, the Rev. Fred Swartz officiating.

Robert S. Monroe

Robert Stuart Monroe, 89, of Winston-Salem, N.C., formerly of Arlington, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

He was an active member of Calvary United Methodist Church of Arlington. He retired from floor contracting. He was a lifetime member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, serving as vice president of Local 1631.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph B. and Lelia (ne Lightner) Monroe; his wife of 64 years, Beulah Margaret Sowers Monroe; and one sister, Mildred Fately.

He is survived by two sons, Stuart B. Monroe of Richmond and Richard L. Monroe of Clarkesville, Ga.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Blasius-Baker Funeral Home, 9320 West St., Manassas. A graveside funeral service will take place at 2:30 p.m. at Sudley United Methodist Church, the Rev. David A. Balcom officiating.

Mark A. Thomas Sr.

Mark A. Thomas Sr., 80, of Bristow, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at Prince William Hospital, Manassas.

He was a World War II veteran. He was a general contractor and served on several boards.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Elizabeth Thomas; a sister, Doris Skinner; and a brother, Ridgley Thomas.

He is survived by two sons, Mark A. Thomas Jr. and Allen A. Thomas, both of Bristow; one daughter, Geralene E. Thomas of Bristow; and several nieces and nephew.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Ames Funeral Home, 8914 Quarry Road, Manassas, at 10 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, 9258 Center St., Manassas, where a funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., the Rev. Jesse Jones Jr. officiating. Interment will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery.

Sybil E. Woodard

Sybil Evelyn Covington Woodard, of Westminster at Lake Ridge, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at Potomac Hospital, Woodbridge.

She was born in Lindale, Ga., and graduated from Cave Spring High School. She then went to nursing school and became a registered nurse in 1940 from Crawford W. Long Hospital. She married in 1941 and lived in Atlanta for 10 years before moving to Prince William in 1951.

She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, the Bethany Sunday school class and the Agape Fellow-ship of United Methodist Women, the Woodbridge Women’s Club, the Rocky Run Garden Club and Historic Dumfries Virginia Inc. She was also a charter member, first president and founder of the Trowel Garden Club of Triangle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Wilbur Woodard Sr.; her brothers, Roscoe Covington and Arthur Eugene Covington Jr.; a son, James David Woodard; and a grandson.

She is survived by four children, Gail Merrily Woodard Sztanko, Michael Robin Woodard, Lynda Frances Woodard Raguz and Stephen Eugene Woodard; two stepchildren, John Wilbur Woodard Jr. and Carolyn Rutherford Woodard Bibault; a brother, William Sidney Covington; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Mountcastle Funeral Home, 4143 Dale Blvd., Dale City. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 1400 G St., Woodbridge. Interment will follow at Dumfries Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alexander Eugene Sztanko Memorial Scholarship Fund at St. Paul United Methodist Church.
