Sylvia P. Castle

Sylvia Pauline Castle, 87, of Manassas, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, at Prince William Hospital, Manassas.

She was a member of Dixieland Travel Trailer Club and a charter member of the Hill and Dale Sams Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Dewey Castle, who died in 1994.

Survivors include two sons, Paul D. Castle and his wife, Virginia, of Front Royal and David R. Castle of Eagle River, Alaska; one grandchild, Erin Castle of Anchorage, Alaska; one great-grandchild, Saundra Castle of Anchorage; two stepgrandchildren, Linda Putnam of Yardley, Pa., and Larry Lawhorne of Chantilly; seven stepgreat-grandchildren, Jonathan, Justin, Jeffrey and Jenna, all of Chantilly, and Jennifer, Jeccisa, and Jacqueline of Yardley, Pa.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center St., Manassas, where services will be held 12:30 p.m. Thursday, the Rev. H.G. Leach officiating. Interment will follow at Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 1211 Connecticut Ave. NW, Suite 204, Washington, DC 20036.

Lloyd H. Newcomer Jr.

Retired U.S. Army Col. Lloyd H. Newcomer Jr., 80, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, in Georgia.

He was a native of Wheeling, W.Va. He compiled a distinguished career in the Army Corps of Engineers.

He had resided at the Landings in Savannah, Ga., since 1994.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Susan (nee Stout) and Lloyd Hampton Newcomer Sr.; his wife of 38 years, Joan C. (nee Scoots) Newcomer; and his second wife of 1 1/2 years, Sara D. Newcomer.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Beckett and Jim Spreng of Canton, Ohio; and two grandchildren, Barron and Morgan Spreng of Canton.

Funeral services will be held at Fort Meyer Chapel at 11 a.m. Thursday. Interment will follow at Arlington National Cemetery with military honors.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 9735 Main St., Fairfax, VA 22031-3798; The Chatham County Division of The American Heart Association in Savannah, Ga.; or Oglebay Park, in Wheeling, W.Va.

Mary F. Whorton

Mary Frances Whorton, 79, of Manassas, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at Annaburg Manor, Manassas.

She was born June 23, 1922, in Rappahannock County, the daughter of the late David and Maude Tharpe Pullen. She was a member of Soul’s Harbor Church of God, Manassas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Henry Whorton, who died in 1969; and her two sons, Charles David Whorton and Ray Taylor Whorton.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Frances Lucille and Elmo Johnson of Stafford, Lorraine V. and Lendale Mayhew of Dale City and Brenda Darlene and Charles Queen of Manassas; two daughters-in-law, Betty Whorton of Manassas and Gertrude Martin of Culpeper; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center St., Manassas, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. D. Tony Willis and the Rev. Douglas Mullins officiating. Interment will follow at Stonewall Memory Gardens, Manassas.
