Stafford gymnasts take third at states
VIRGINIA BEACH — With a combined score of 146.475, the Stafford High School gymnastics team soared to an impressive third-place finish in the Group AAA State Championships Friday at Salem High School in Virginia Beach. Princess Anne took the team title for the third straight year scoring a 152.125 followed by Frank Cox at 148.025. Osbourn Park finished sixth with a 140.875.
The Indians qualified for the state meet by winning the Commonwealth Region title and the Northwest Regional Championships.
Leading the way Friday for Stafford was freshman Allison Brooks who scored a career high 37.5. Senior Jennifer Little was second for the Indians at 37.025.
BOYS BASKETBALL
QUANTICO 57, WORD OF LIFE 46: For the second straight night, Quantico earned a win over Word of Life. The Warriors had beaten Word of Life 65-50 on Thursday night as well.
On Friday night, Andrew Thomas scored 17 and Andre Walker added 13 for Quantico (12-10, 10-8 DAC). For Word of Life, Matt Ford led the scoring with 15 points.
The Warriors were set to begin the DAC tournament on Monday, but the event got moved back because of the potential of inclement weather. The tournament will now start Tuesday, and Warriors coach Paul Roy was still waiting for definite word on who Quantico’s first-round opponent would be.
BROOKE POINT 57, NORTH STAFFORD 54: Down two with 30 seconds left, North Stafford was unable to connect on a game-tying shot and lost a Commonwealth District game to Brooke Point.
The Black-Hawks’ Tim Pedersen led all scorers with 18, while teammate Bernard Grimsley scored 11. For North Stafford, Chris Darnell scored 15 while Cameron Hilliard added 10.
girls BASKETBALL
SETON 67, EMMANUEL CHRISTIAN 53: Several players from both teams reached double figures in Seton’s 67-53 girls basketball win over Emmanuel Christian on Friday night.
Seton’s Lizzie Wilson led all scorers with 22 points, and she got help from Lauren Sewell, Lindsey Johnson and Mary Grimburg, who all scored 12 points.
In the loss, Emmanuel Christian (8-8, 8-5 Delaney Athletic Conference) saw four of its scorers break double digits as well. Jaci Long led the way with 17, while Donielle Francis and Sara Hendry has 12 apiece. Megan Gibson finished with 10 points.
STAFFORD 38, COLONIAL FORGE 35: Colonial Forge hung tough with Stafford, but the Indians came away with the win.
Colonial Forge improves to 13-6 on the season, with an 8-1 mark in the Commonwealth District. The Indians, meanwhile, drop to 2-16, 1-8.
