Discover Richmond

The Virginia Department of Education currently sponsors 16 Governor’s Schools to allow students to explore areas including the arts, government, mathematics and technology. Two are located in the Richmond area. The Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School for Government and International Studies, 1000 N. Lombardy St., serves 11 school divisions: Charles City, Chesterfield, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, King and Queen, New Kent, Petersburg, Powhatan, Prince George and the city of Richmond.

The school is dedicated to improving education in government and international studies. It offers more than 190 courses, instruction in 10 foreign languages and international field study. Enrollment for 2005-06 is 648 students. Info: 354-6800 or www.gsgis.k12.va.us.

The Appomattox Regional Governor’s School for the Arts and Technology (ARGS), 512 W. Washington St. in Petersburg, serves 14 districts: Amelia, Charles City, Chesterfield, Colonial Heights, Dinwiddie, Franklin, Hopewell, Petersburg, Powhatan, Prince George, Richmond, Southampton, Surry and Sussex.

Funded by the Appomattox Educational Foundation, ARGS serves more than 340 students in grades 9-12. The school offers studies for students gifted in the arts or technology. Info: 722-0200 or www.args.k12.va.us.
