Manassas Journal Messenger | Mazzanti leads the way as tournament field is trimmed to 32

Despite competing in his first major tournament of the year, Vince Mazzanti Jr. of Levittown, Pa., is atop the qualifying board for the 2003 Professional Bowlers Association Senior Tour taking place in Manassas.

He posted a 228.37 average and made the cut for the 32 finalists from the field of 160 of the world’s best senior bowlers.

“I really feel like I’ve got a good chance to take it all,” said Mazzanti Monday at the Manassas Bowl America.

He will be among the bowlers who start the round of 32 this morning. In match play, the 32 will be trimmed to 16 and then 8 and then four and then two and the championship will be determined in the best off-three match immediately following the round of four.

In the 2002 PBA Senior Rookie of the Year race, Mazzanti was the overwhelming selection.

Participating in eight events over the course of the season, Mazzanti, then 50, led all senior rookies in earnings, points and match play appearances and compiled the second-highest rookie average at 213.45.

He also had the highest finish of the season among rookies, placing second to Pete Couture in the season-ending PBA Senior Jackson Open at Airport Lanes in Jackson, Mich.

Mazzanti said the Manassas tournament was his first of the year “because of pressing family and business obligations.”

He plans to enter three other tournaments this year – in Tennessee, Indiana and Michigan.

Mazzanti said he is following in the footsteps of his father, Vince Sr. who was also a semi-pro bowler.

“I guess since the age of eight, I spend a lot of time in bowling alleys. I got my first job when I was 12 and have been associated with bowling ever since. He works as a pro shop manager in Philadelphia.

“I really like the lanes here in Manassas and fell pretty confident I’ll do well in today’s head-to-head matchup … but there are a lot of talented bowlers competing.” Mazzanti said. He’s staying at the Day’s Inn in Yorkshire with fellow bowler Steve Stein of Staten Island, N.Y.

Stein didn’t make the final cut but added “I’ll be rooting my buddy on.”

Mazzanti earned 76.8 percent of the votes cast in the Rookie of the Year honor. Other players received consideration for the award included Mike Winklpleck, Bob Handley and Gene Vincent.

Mazzanti joins a list of talented players to have won the award including Couture, Dale Eagle and Mark Roth who all have gone on to win PBA Senior Player of the Year honors later in their careers.

He has already been inducted into three Bowling Hall of Fames -Lower Bucks County, South Jersey and Neshaminy where he graduated from high school.

Mazzanti said he has no other hobbies. “Bowling is my life,” he concluded.
