Manassas Journal Messenger | Walton no longer on Tech team

Former Hylton football star D.J. Walton was kicked off the Virginia Tech football team after being arrested a second time for driving while intoxicated.

Walton was arrested for the second time on March 28 and was kicked off of the team, according to a July 17 on-line story at TechSideline.com. It was first reported that Walton was arrested in the Roanoke Times on June 26.

On Monday, Walton was no longer listed on the football roster on Virginia Tech’s web site. He was also not listed in the players’ section of the Hokies’ 2003 media guide.

The redshirt sophomore was sentenced to 90 days in jail, 85 days of which were suspended. Walton played 14 games in a reserve role with the Hokies in 2002, making seven solo tackles and 10 overall. Walton was listed as a second-string rover in the Spring Practice Media Guide behind fifth-year senior Michael Crawford. He was moved from cornerback to rover midway through the 2002 campaign.

At Hylton, Walton was a star running back and defensive back on the Bulldogs teams that made the Group AAA state championship game in 2000 and won state titles in 1998 and 1999. He rushed for 103 yards and two touchdowns and also made four interceptions in the 18-13 win over Potomac in the 2000 Northwest Region championship game.

Walton did not return a phone call seeking comment. Officials from Virginia Tech were also unavailable on Monday evening.
