Area hospitals offer residents an array of state-of-the-art medical care. There are a variety of services available to patients and numerous doctors representing many specialties.

POTOMAC HOSPITAL

Located at 2300 Opitz Blvd. in Woodbridge, Potomac has grown in its 30 years from 29 beds, 115 employees and 61 physicians to 153 patient beds, more than 1,000 employees and more than 250 medical staff members.

The hospital also has expanded and renovated many of its facilities. The Century Medical Building has been completed and houses Century Surgical Services, physician offices and rehabilitation services.

The labor, delivery and recovery rooms and Post Partum Unit have been renovated. The newborn nursery, the transitional nursery for infants not ready to leave the hospital yet and the neonatal intensive care unit have also been renovated.

The hospital also renovated and expanded its Critical Care Unit. Potomac offers a full range of medical services including a cardiac evaluation center, which provides diagnostic tests, heart-risk evaluation, body composition analysis, cholesterol screenings and blood pressure screenings. It also has magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) services, health education including maternity and wellness classes, a physician referral service, an out-patient surgery center, a progressive care unit, laser surgery and full maternity services.

The hospital offers a cancer center and a Family Health Connection Mobile Clinic. Nurse practitioners from the hospital work out of two vans providing primary health care to residents in the Woodbridge/Dale City area and the Triangle/Dumfries areas. The nurses provide physical examinations, vision and hearing screenings, growth assessments, blood pressure checks, immunizations, basic medical care and health information.

Another service is the Adult Partial Hospitalization Program, a day treatment program in the Behavior Healthcare Unit. Two psychiatrists and a team of behavioral health professionals manage the program to provide an alternative to 24-hour hospitalization for people who require a structured, treatment-intensive environment. In addition, there are support groups for people with chronic respiratory disease, fibromyalgia, breast cancer, lupus and Alzheimer’s, Crohn’s and Colitis diabetes.

PRINCE WILLIAM HOSPITAL

Prince William Hospital is a non-profit community hospital located at 8700 Sudley Road in Manassas. Established in 1964, the 170-bed hospital offers a full range of traditional inpatient and outpatient services, including medical, obstetrical, pediatric, surgical and critical care.

Prince William Hospital’s emergency room includes a specialized section just for children called ERjr. as well as Quick ER, which provides fast treatment of minor injuries and illnesses. The hospital also offers the latest in healthcare technology with MRI and CT scanning, lithotripsy, laser surgery, nuclear medicine and cardiac catheterization.

The hospital’s 32-bed Center for Psychiatric and Addiction Treatment offers crisis intervention, inpatient and outpatient services for adolescents and adults.

Prince William Health System, the parent company of the hospital, operates a medical office center on the hospital grounds. The building houses an outpatient dialysis center; doctors’ offices; a Fitness Center, that offers a comprehensive fitness program; and a Wellness Center, that offers community safety courses and maternal child health programs as well as courses in nutrition and diabetes management.

The health system provides a number of healthcare services such as skilled nursing, a rehabilitation center, assisted living apartments and home care services.

It also operates the Prince William Medical Center in Gainesville, which houses doctors’ offices, radiology services and physical therapy.

Over the next few years, the health system plans to spend more than $80 million on expansions and renovations. Plans include a new Emergency Services Department, which will double the number of treatment rooms from 22 to 44, and an Ambulatory Surgery Center.

In addition, renovations and expansions are planned for the Radiology Department and the operating rooms. The health system is also planning a joint venture with Fauquier Hospital to build a Radiation Therapy Center in Gainesville.

A second MRI unit enables the staff to serve twice as many patients and shorten waiting times for this diagnostic service.

Meanwhile, the construction of the Hylton Family Birthing Center is complete. This new facility features such amenities as 32 private postpartum rooms; two newborn nurseries; a state-of-the-art Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and eight roomy Labor, Delivery and Recovery rooms.

There are 387 physicians representing 39 specialties on the medical staff at Prince William Hospital, and more than 95 percent of the medical staff is board certified.
