The Prince William County government usually honors employees for doing their job well, but this month county officials are honoring a group of employees for doing something not included in their job description.
Six Fire and Rescue Department employees were chosen as the employees of the month for August for going out of their way to help an elderly couple in Nokesville.
Capt. Doug Monaco, Lt. Paul Hebert and technicians Matt Eckert, Thomas Hawkins, Loren Little and Andrew Knick, all of Engine Company 525 and Medic Unit 555, went out of their way to help a Nokesville man who had trouble moving from his garage to his house, county officials said.
The wheelchair-bound man often fell while trying to make his way from the garage to the kitchen.
The rescue workers had responded to 15 calls from the house in a six-month period to help the man.
The team decided to help the man by building a ramp from the garage to the kitchen doorway, so that he would not have to get out of his wheelchair and risk falling again.
While the Nokesville man was at a doctor’s appointment, the team visited the house to build the ramp.
Battalion Chief Scott Davis nominated the six employees for their efforts to find a creative and effective solution to the problem.
The ramp will help the Nokesville couple prevent future accidents and will free up the company to respond to other calls, county officials said.
