Manassas Journal Messenger | Black Wolf Rescue founder in jail
The founder of Black Wolf Rescue in Triangle remains in jail after he was charged Tuesday with 28 counts of animal cruelty.
Robert Clifton Artois, 56, was scheduled to appear in Prince William General District Court Thursday for a hearing to determine if the dogs and wolf hybrids would be returned to Artois or if the county can take ownership.
Animal control officers seized 28 live dogs and wolf hybrids from 19325 Fuller Heights Road, where Artois had his home and shelter on three acres of land. The animals are being held at the Prince William Animal Shelter. None are available for viewing or adoption at present.
In court Thursday, Artois, who appeared in a green jail jumpsuit, told Judge Wenda K. Travers that he wanted his attorney present at the hearing. Travers explained that because the case is a civil case not a criminal case, he is not entitled to a lawyer. Animal control authorities are required to present the petition regarding ownership within 10 days of seizing the animals, Travers said. But Travers agreed to postpone the case if Artois waived his right to the hearing within 10 days.
The civil petition and the 28 animal cruelty charges are scheduled for hearing June 1.
