Daniel Davis, perhaps the most talented’ football player to ever come out of Stafford County, may have seen his roller-coaster college career come to an end this past weekend, according to the Manhattan (Kan.) Mercury newspaper.
The former Brooke Point High School running back was arrested over the weekend along with teammate James McGill on the campus of Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan.
According to the Manhattan (Kan.) Mercury, Riley County police arrested the two Kansas State football players, after a lengthy investigation, for their involvement in a June mugging of two students in Aggieville, Kan.
Davis was charged with three counts of theft, the Mercury stated, while McGill was charged with one count of battery.
According to the Kansas City Star newspaper, the incident occurred on June 27.
Davis matriculated to the University of North Carolina after graduating from Brooke Point in 1999 and led the Tar Heels in rushing in his freshman year. But after academic and legal problems, Davis went west to play at Garden City (Kan.) Community College.
In the fall of 2002, Davis landed as a backup running back at Kansas State for his junior season where he rushed for 224 yards – good for third most on the team. He was expected to see time at wide receiver for the Wildcats, who were recently picked No. 5 in the preseason coaches’ poll. McGill played safety for the Wildcats.
According to the Star, both Davis and McGill were in uniform at Media Day this past Saturday but the Kansas State two-deep depth chart updated Aug. 1 at www.k-statesports.com does not list Davis. However, the two seniors are both named on the team roster.
That brings to the total of six K-State football players that have been arrested since July, the Star said.
