Coulles named star of tomorrow
2003 STAR OF TOMORROW
Lindsey Coulles of Centerville, Ohio, has been named the Women’s International Bowling Congress 2003 Alberta E. Crowe Star of Tomorrow.
The award, named for Alberta E. Crowe who was the WIBC’s fourth president from 1960-81, annually recognizes star qualities in a female high school senior or college student who competes in bowling. Star qualities include: distinguished sanctioned bowling performances on the local, regional, state, provincial and national levels; academic achievement; and extracurricular involvement. Award winners receive a $1,500 scholarship, renewable for up to three years for a total of $6,000 in scholarships.
Coulles, a senior, currently competes on her Centerville High School bowling team coached by her father Greg Coulles. She previously competed on her high school softball, basketball and golf teams. A member of the 2003 Junior TEAM USA, Coulles will be involved in a one-week training camp at the United States Olympic Training Center as well as international competition.
While anchoring her school’s state championship team during the 2001-02 season, Coulles was also Ohio’s individual state champion. She earned consecutive Junior Tournament Bowler’s Association Girl Bowler of the Year awards in 2000-01 and 2001-02 in addition to the Girl Sportsman of the Year award in 2001-02. Coulles is a 12-time Junior Tournament Bowler’s Association Tournament champion.
Coulles was the 2000-01 Adult-Junior Doubles Champion (with Professional Women’s Bowling Association member and 2003 WIBC Hall of Fame inductee Linda Kelly) and captured Junior Gold Tournament Championships in 2000-01 and 2002-03 at the Midwest USA Scholarship Tournament.
A 12-time Dayton-area Young American Bowling Alliance Tournament champion and five-time Ohio State YABA Tournament champion, Coulles posted the highest sanctioned girls’ league average in the Ohio YABA during both the 2000-01 (213 average) and 2001-02 seasons (214 average). She rolled her only perfect “300” game as part of a career-high 801 series on Sept. 16, 2000.
Coulles is a member of the National Honor Society and maintains a 3.7 grade point average. She serves as a volunteer for the Special Olympics bowling program and is her senior class representative for an early childhood education program.
“I feel very honored to have won this most prestigious award,” said Coulles. “I am very grateful to the WIBC and for its strong and continued support of youth bowling. I am thankful that my parents and coaches were able to help me reach for the stars.”
Coulles will receive the award at the 2003 WIBC Annual Meeting April 28-30 in Reno, Nev.
DEACON NAMED NABI AREA
TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR
Kathy Deacon of Columbia, Md., has been named National Amateur Bowlers (NABI) Area Tournament Director for the Baltimore-Washington Region.
Deacon fills the vacancy left by Sam Cheek. Deacon, who has over fifteen-years of NABI Tournament experience, previously served in this same position.

DAN GLUS DIES
Bowling Writers Association of America Executive Director Dan Glus of North Braddock, Pa., known throughout the worldwide bowling community as Pittsburgh bowling radio show host “Big D,” died at his home December 10 of an apparent massive heart attack. He was 64.
Glus, who hosted “Talks and Tips with Big D” on radio station WEDO in Pittsburgh, also wrote bowling columns for the Pittsburgh Tribune. He was elected to BWAA’s top administrative position during the organization’s 2002 convention in Billings, Mont., where he also received the BWAA Mort Luby Sr. Meritorious Service Award for his forty-one years of service to bowling journalism. The BWAA Past President also was a former member of the American Bowling Congress Hall of Fame Board. He was the perennial winner of the Professional Bowlers Association award for “best radio coverage” of PBA competition and has been inducted into four bowling halls of fame.
An accomplished competitor on the lanes, Glus was a member of the G&C McDermitt team from Pittsburgh that won the 1965 ABC Championships Tournament team title. That title led to a spot on TEAM USA 1966 where he helped the United States win a gold medal in eight-man team, silver in five-man team and bronze in men’s doubles in the Federation Internationale des Quilleurs American Zone Championships in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
Glus is survived by his wife Fritzie, sons Dan Jr. and Dean, daughter Dionne and two grandchildren.
MID-SEASON LEAGUES
FORMING IN CENTERS
Mid-season leagues are now forming in many of the area’s bowling centers which will start in January 2003 and end in late April or early May.
Some of the centers will be conducting an instruction league for the beginning bowler where the participant will receive a new bowling ball at the conclusion of the short season. Several new leagues will be offering merchanise, a day trip to Atlantic City, N.J., a day trip to the beach, etc., at the end of the bowling schedule.

Entries for the 46th Annual Virginia State Women’s Bowling Association Championship Tournament close Jan. 15, 2003.
The team event will be conducted at Triangle Lanes with the doubles and singles events being hosted by New River Valley Superbowl. Both centers are located in Christiansburg, Va.
Each tournament event features four handicap divisions including an optional all events category.
The tournament opens Mar. 15 and will be held every weekend (excluding Easter weekend, Apr. 19-20) until May 25.
