Area track stars fare well at Nike Indoors

Several Prince William County athletes achieved all-American status after their performances in the Nike Indoor Championships at Landover, Md. on Saturday and Sunday.

Forest Park senior Reynold Smith finished sixth in the triple jump on Saturday to achieve all-American status. The 2002 Group AAA indoor state champion in the event, Smith leaped a career-best 47 feet, three inches. His previous best of 46-1 also came at Landover in the first of two invitationals held this winter at Prince George Sports & Learning Complex.

Smith narrowly missed all-American status in the long jump, finishing seventh overall.

The Bruins’ Distance Medley Relay team of Ecaterina Burton, Christina Lindsay, Karen Richardson and Beth Fahey also finished sixth. Burton ran the 1,200-meter leg, Lindsay the 400, Richardson the 800 and Fahey the 1,600. The foursome won the slow heat in 12:27.94 to achieve all-American status.

Gar-Field senior and Group AAA state champion Tiffany Evans finished fourth in the shot put while 55-meter state champion Joe Robinson of Potomac was fifth in the 60-meter dash.
