Cannons pummel Blue Rocks

WILMINGTON –The Potomac Cannons banged out 14 hits in a 6-1 win over the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Saturday night.

The victory helped the Cannons (12-10) salvage a three-game set with the Carolina League Northern Division first-half champions.

Right fielder Skip Schumaker was 3 for 4 with a triple and two RBI while Billy Munoz, Johnny Hernandez and Jeremy Luster all had a pair of hits. Catcher Dan Moylan and second baseman Ramon Araujo added an RBI apiece.

Rhett Parrott pitched seven innings of five hit, one-run ball, whiffing eight to improve to 8-5 on the season. Recently activated relief pitcher John Novinsky pitched a scoreless eighth inning with two strikeouts and Kevin Sprague tossed a scoreless ninth.

Wes Wilkerson (3-4) took the loss for Wilmington (10-12) despite holding the Cannons to three runs one earned in six innings. Jamie Eppeneder came in the eighth inning and gave up four hits and two runs. Araujo and Schumaker had RBI singles off Eppeneder. Potomac also notched a run off Dusty Wrightsman in the ninth on an RBI single by Moylan.

Designated hitter Justin Cowan had three of the Blue Rocks’ six hits.

After an off day on Sunday, the Cannons travel to Salem for a 7:05 p.m. contest.
