Dufour wins it for MP at the buzzer
MANASSAS PARK — The Manassas Park Cougars pulled off their biggest win of the season when senior J.J. Dufour nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to knock off Clarke County, 50-48, on Tuesday.
The Eagles were tied for first place in the Bull Run District with Brentsville at 9-1 heading into the game against the Cougars. However, Sidney Welch scored 25 points, including eight in the fourth quarter, as Manassas Park (8-13, 4-8 Bull Run) pulled off the shocker.
“It was a great game, a great effort all the away around,” Manassas Park coach Bob Schaul said.
With a minute to go, Clarke was up 48-46 when the Cougars’ Reggie Rigaud was fouled. Rigaud made one of two free throws to slice the deficit to 48-47. Manassas Park fouled Jason Reid as time was running down and Reid missed the front end of the one-and-one situation.
The Cougars couldn’t get Welch the ball on their ensuing possession and called timeout with seven seconds left. During the timeout, the Cougars decided to set a double screen to get Welch open again. However, Clark defended the play and Dufour made what Schaul called “the highlight of his career” on Senior Night.
“J.J. stepped up and took the jumper and hit nothing but net as time expired,” Schaul said.
Rigaud had a team-high eight rebounds to go with five points. Reid and Derek Underwood finished with 14 points apiece for Clarke (16-4, 9-2).
Manassas Park won’t play until the first round of the Bull Run District tournament on Tuesday. Seedings have yet to be determined.
BRENTSVILLE 62, GEORGE MASON 43: The Tigers (14-7, 10-1 Bull Run) rolled up a big lead early and kept the pressure on to drill the host Mustangs and stay atop the Bull Run District standings.
Brentsville can win the regular-season district title outright if they beat Madison at home on Thursday.
After nearly blowing a 20-point lead against rival Manassas Park on Saturday night, Brentsville extended its lead to as many as 24 points in Monday’s rout. Ramsey Boyd had 21 points and five assists and Jake Lavely added 14 points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots.
“They wouldn’t let us practice on Monday because of the snow so I wasn’t sure [how we’d play], but we responded,” Brentsville coach Doug Poppe said. “At the five minute mark, we were up 20 and I called a timeout and said, ‘Remember this [from Saturday night].’ From there, we put it to around 24, 25 points and kept it from there.”
Brian Owen made his first start in six games. The team’s leading scorer, who was benched for not playing consistent enough defense, had seven points in a foul-plagued game.
“He played all right,” Poppe said.
STONEWALL JACKSON 54, OSBOURN PARK 53: In Manassas, Adam Woodward’s only points of the game proved to be the most important. Woodward’s basket as time expired gave the Raiders the Group AAA Cedar Run District win Tuesday and handed the Yellow Jackets their first district loss of the season.
The play started when the ball was inbounded to Tyc Snow. His shot missed, but Woodward was there for the rebound. Snow led the Raiders (9-10, 2-2) with 22 points. Adam Hinton-Moore led the Yellow Jackets (9-10, 3-1) with 24 points.
POTOMAC 82, OSBOURN 72: In Manassas, four Panthers finished in double figures in Tuesday’s Group AAA Cedar Run District game. Jason Flagler led the way with 18 points followed by Jermaine Williams (15), Anthony Mills (14) and Eric Hayes (13). Williams and Mills both had career highs for points. Potomac is now 17-3 overall and 3-1 in the district.
Brandon Oglesby led Osbourn (8-12, 0-4) with 20 points.
GAR-FIELD 50, FOREST PARK 48: Chris Vann had a game-high 23 points as the Indians won their fifth straight Tuesday in a Group AAA Cardinal District game. Gar-Field is now 3-2 in the district and 13-7 overall.
QUANTICO 58, FREDERICKSBURG ACADEMY 44: Andrew Thomas had 23 points and Patrick Croffie had 11 as the Warriors won in Fredericksburg on Tuesday in a Delaney Athletic Conference game.
FREDERICKSBURG CHRISTIAN 43, EMMANUEL CHRISTIAN 39: In Fredericksburg, Trey Compton had 11 points for the visiting Flames (11-11, 10-7) in Tuesday’s Delaney Athletic Conference game.
GIRLS
OSBOURN PARK 50, STONEWALL JACKSON 31: Erin Myers scored 13 of her game-high 19 points in the second half as the Yellow Jackets moved one step closer toward clinching the Group AAA Cedar Run District title outright. Osbourn Park (7-11 overall, 4-0 in the district) has two games left, tonight against Potomac and Friday against Osbourn.
Sarah Thompson added 15 points, including 10 in the second quarter.
POTOMAC 53, OSBOURN 52: In Manassas, Stephanie Adkins hit a 3-pointer with just under two seconds left in regulation to lift the Panthers past the host Eagles Tuesday in a Group AAA Cedar Run District game.
Down 52-50 with just under 10 seconds left and following an Osbourn turnover, Adkins threw the ball to Tiffany Jenkins. Jenkins then passed back to Adkins, who scored the game-winner.
Jenkins led Potomac (6-13, 2-2) with 21 points and Erica McDavid added 17. Stephanie Gaynord had 22 points for Osbourn (5-15, 0-4).
SHENANDOAH VALLEY 50, EMMANUEL 39: Lucy Ramsey had 25 points to lead the hosts past the visiting Flames (8-7, 8-4 DAC). Jaci Long had 13 points, Donielle Francis 12 and Sara Hendrey 11 for Emmanuel, which play Friday at Seton.
Shenandoah led 30-23 at halftime.
SETON 57, FREDERICKSBURG CHRISTIAN 48: In Manassas, Mary Grimberg had a game-high 23 points as Seton improved to 18-5 overall and 10-0 in the Delaney Athletic Conference. Lizzie Wilson and Lauren Sewell added 14 and 11 points, respectively.
QUANTICO 42, FREDERICKSBURG ACADEMY 39: Nicole Taylor hit two free throws with 11 seconds left to seal the Warriors’ Delaney Athletic Conference win Tuesday. Nikki Davis broke a 39-all tie with 30 seconds left by hitting one of two free throws.
Quantico is now 9-7 overall and 7-6 in the DAC.
LATE MONDAYBOYS
BROOKE POINT 69, COLONIAL FORGE 48: The host Black-Hawks (5-14, 2-5 Commonwealth District) led by 11 at halftime and went on to rout the Eagles on Monday.
Tim Pedersen scored 21 points and teammates Julian Borders and Chad Hegna added 12 points apiece for Brooke Point. Hegna, the Black-Hawks’ 6-6 post player, also grabbed 10 rebounds and had five block shots.
Korey Whiting had 21 points for Colonial Forge.
