Indians take third at Scuderi

The Gojekian Relays at Woodbridge wasn’t the only meet this weekend with excellent performances by local track athletes.

Despite missing Group AAA indoor state shot put champion Tiffany Evans, who was taking her SAT, Gar-Field finished fourth in the Scuderi Team Challenge at West Potomac on Saturday. The boys finished second behind Lake Braddock.

Lake Braddock also took first in the girls’ competition while Robinson and Largo (Md.) were second and third. Without Evans, Gar-Field still managed 56 points, thanks largely to Indians senior Afua Amponsah. The Annandale transfer won the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles with times of 14.76 and 46.79 as well as the 100-meter dash, where she ran a 12.53.

The Indians 3,200-meter relay finished third while their 400-meter relay was fourth. Devona Knight and Sophia Lafontant were tied for third in the high jump at 4-feet-8 inches.

In the boys, Jarmel Latney was second in the high jump and third in both the 110 and 300-meter hurdles while teammate Terry Jackson was second in the long jump and sixth in the triple jump. Eric Coleman and Darren Garrigan finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 100-meter dash while Coleman was fourth in the 200. Liggins added a fifth-place finish in the triple jump.

Gar-Field’s 3,200-meter relay team was third overall.

In the boys, Carl Brown placed fourth in the 300 hurdles while Kevin Brown and Jerrell Ware were sixth, respectively, in the 100 and 400.

The Panthers’ 400-meter relay finished fourth while the 1,600-meter relay squad was fifth.
