Potomac News Online | Couple impersonates police officers

A man and a woman pretending to be police officers stole jewelry from a Manassas area home Monday afternoon while pretending to conduct a search, Prince William County police said.

The two impersonators are still at large after robbing the house in the 9400 block of Lafayette Avenue in the West Gate of Lomond subdivision around 2 p.m., said 1st Sgt. Kim Chinn, police spokeswoman.

A 22-year-old woman answered the door after the two bogus police officers knocked on her door and showed her some kind of identification, police said.

They asked for a person in the house, but no one by that name lived at the house. They asked the victim to get identification and she went to an upstairs bedroom to get some, police said.

When she returned, the two impersonators were inside the house and presented a piece of paper saying they needed to search a room in the house, police said.

The victim could not read the paper

because of a language barrier and let them search the room they wanted to. However, she later found some jewelry missing and after contacting police learned that the officers were frauds and the document they had was false, police said.

Chinn said it’s possible that the impersonators targeted the woman because she speaks a different language, but that has not been confirmed.

The first impersonator is a white man in his early to mid-30s who is 6-feet-1-inches tall with black hair. He was wearing a blue jacket, large black belt and sunglasses during the incident, police said.

The second impersonator is a white woman in her mid- to late 30s who is 5-feet-8-inches tall and weighs 140 pounds with blond hair. She was wearing blue jeans, a white sweater and sunglasses during the incident, police said.

They left the scene in a green Ford sedan, police said.
