Potomac News Online | City man charged in sexual assaults

A 23-year-old Manassas man was arrested after attempting to sexually assault two women inside their homes in separate incidents last week, Manassas police said.

Jose David Hernandez-Castaneda of 8401 Piney Point Court was charged with two counts of burglary with intent to commit assault and sexual battery, said Sgt. Tim Neumann, police spokesman.

In both incidents Hernandez-Castaneda allegedly followed a woman into her house and then tried to force himself on her. He was unsuccessful both times, police said.

Hernandez-Castaneda was riding his bike in the 8800 block of Sudley Road on Tuesday afternoon when an officer stopped him. He gave a fake name, and after further investigation police matched Hernandez-Castaneda as the man who sexually assaulted the two women, police said.

On April 14, a 35-year-old Manassas woman took out her trash in the 8500 block of Stonewall Road around 11:20 a.m. when a Hispanic man allegedly approached her and asked if he could help, police said.

The victim said no and went back in the house and began to talk on the phone. A few moments later she felt someone touch her from behind. She turned around to see the same man who asked to help with the trash. She screamed, but the man grabbed her throat and covered her mouth, police said.

The victim began to struggle and hit the man on the head with the phone and was able to free herself. She then ran from the house toward Piney Court and contacted police.

A similar incident occurred Sunday in the 8500 block of Piney Point Court.

A 27-year-old Manassas woman was walking her dog in the area when a Hispanic man walked past and exchanged greetings, police said.

The victim went in the backdoor of her house and saw the man behind her after taking off her dog’s collar. The man began to touch the victim, but she ran to another room to get her brother, police said.

When the brother came out, he saw the suspect get on a blue BMX bike and ride toward Liberia Avenue, police said.

Hernandez-Castaneda is being held without bond and is scheduled to appear in court June 2.
