Richmond Spelling Bee The winner of the 2006 Richmond Times-Dispatch Spelling Bee is Lizzie Barnett, a 12-year-old student at Richmond Montessori School. We wish Lizzie the best of luck as she prepares to represent The Times-Dispatch at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC.
Congratulations to Lizzie and all the students who participated in the 2006 Richmond Times-Dispatch Spelling Bee. History The Richmond News Leader sponsored local spelling bees from 1922 to 1945. The first modern Richmond Newspapers bee took place in 1975, sponsored by The News Leader, with seven participating divisions. In 1992, the winner of the Richmond bee, eighth-grader Amanda Goad, won the Scripps Howard National Bee. Shortly after Amanda’s win at the national bee, The News Leader merged with the Richmond Times-Dispatch. The Times-Dispatch has sponsored the Richmond bee since 1993. Divisions
