School Board revises comment procedure
A recent revision to Prince William County Public Schools Regulation 133-1 has added a new way for residents to sign up to address the Prince William County School Board at meetings.
Typically, residents who wish to address the School Board during citizens’ comment time must notify the Board Clerk in writing, by telephone or by e-mail prior to noon on the day of the Board meeting, providing a name, address, phone number and topic.
Effective beginning with the Jan. 2 School Board meeting, residents may also sign onto the list of speakers maintained at the entrance to the School Board meeting room at the beginning of a regular School Board meeting, but prior to 6:30 p.m. on the evening of the meeting.
Residents of Prince William County may present their views on issues of public concern which relate to the operation of Prince William County Public Schools.They may also submit written or electronic comments to members of the School Board. The complete procedures for citizen communication with the School Board are outlined in PWCS Regulation 133-1. PWCS policies and regulations are accessible on the PWCS Web site, pwcs.edu, under “About Us.”
With the exception of November and December when meeting dates may change, the School Board meets during the school year on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the School Board Meeting Room, 14800 Joplin Road, Independent Hill.

Richardson appointed to regional VSBA position
Prince William County School Board Member Don Richardson (Gainesville) was appointed Vice Chairman for the Northeast Region of the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) during the organization’s annual conference. Richardson’s nomination was approved by the School Board during its Nov. 7 meeting.
The Virginia School Boards Association is a voluntary, nonpartisan association whose primary mission is the advancement of education through the unique American tradition of local citizen control of, and accountability for, the Commonwealth’s public schools. The VSBA represents the Commonwealth’s 134 school boards who, in turn, govern the schools attended by 100 percent of the public school children in Virginia
School division honors outgoing chairwoman
A tribute celebration honoring outgoing School Board Chairwoman Lucy S. Beauchamp is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 12, from 4 to 6 p.m. PWCS staff, pupils and community members are invited to come extend their thanks and support to Beauchamp, who served 16 years on the Prince William County School Board. The celebration will be held at Hylton High School, 14051 Spriggs Road in Woodbridge.
Beauchamp was appointed Brentsville District representative to the School Board in 1992. While still representing Brentsville, she served as vice chairman from 1992 to 1994 and chairman from 1994 to 1996. In 1996, Beauchamp became the School Board’s first elected at-large chairman. She was re-elected in 1999 and 2003. On July 1, 2007, Beauchamp began her 16th year as a member of the Prince William County School Board.
Beauchamp is on the Board of Directors of the Prince William County Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce, Prince William Regional Chamber of Commerce and PWCS Education Foundation. Currently she serves as vice chairman of community development for the Prince William-Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce. She also serves as chairman of Virginia CARES, a statewide consortium. She remains employed as development director for the Belmont Bay Science Center.
Schools host vendor information sessions
Prince William County Public Schools Department of Financial Services will host buyer/seller informational exchange sessions on Friday, from 10 a.m. until noon and from 2 until 4 p.m. Business representatives will have the opportunity to learn about PWCS’ procurement processes, discover upcoming contracting opportunities and meet PWCS’ procurement staff members. The programs will be held in the Administration Building (Room 135) at the PWCS Independent Hill Complex, 14800 Joplin Road, Manassas. Space is limited.

The School Board meets during the school year on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, except November and December, at 6:30 p.m. in the School Board Meeting Room, 14800 Joplin Road, Manassas. Public meetings are open to the public and are broadcast live on PWCS-TV, available to Comcast subscribers on Channel 18 and Verizon subscribers on Channel 36. Closed sessions are held prior to each regular meeting at 6 p.m. Special meetings are called when necessary to conduct school business and are announced in advance.
Disciplinary committee schedules meeting
The Prince William County School Board Disciplinary Committee has scheduled a meeting for Wednesday at 5 p.m. School Board Members Lucy S. Beauchamp (Chairwoman, At-Large), Betty D. Covington (Dumfries), and Julie C. Lucas (Neabsco) will convene the meeting. The meeting will take place in the School Board Meeting Room at Independent Hill.
