Manassas Journal Messenger | Rooftop season-opener offers insight into women

The sensational musical hit “A … My Name is Alice” will kick off Rooftop Productions’ 2006-2007 season Friday at the Center for the Arts in Manassas.

This award-winning musical, created by a variety of comedy writers, lyricists and composers, is a comedic revue that offers insight into contemporary women and what makes them laugh and what makes them cry. The musical was conceived by Joan Micklin Silver and Julianne Boyd with Joellen Livingston as the musical director.

Director Scott Bailey of Manassas describes the show as a “collection of songs, monologues, and scenes which examine life as a woman with men, with other women, with children, and with oneself.”

Cast members include: Tasha Boutselis, Kat Brais, Pat Clark, Deb Crawford, Mimsi Janis, Anita Miller, Val Nelson and Amy Treat.

“Each woman in this cast brings something different to the show; a unique quality which all blends into an excellent ensemble,” said Bailey.

Deb Crawford of Manassas is an award-winning member of the Castaways Repertory Theatre. She takes on multiple roles in this musical.

“Despite what one of my characters says, this show is not for women ? only,” she said. “The highlight of the show for me has been the chance to sing ‘The Portrait.’ I’ve been a fan of Amanda McBroom for years and this song in particular.”

McBroom, a Golden Globe winner, first became well known after Bette Midler’s performance of her song hit No. 1 in 1979. “The Portrait” takes a look at mother-daughter relationships which is a major issue in the musical.

“It’s sometimes funny, sometimes ribald, sometimes achingly poignant, just like life,” Bailey said. “While there’s nothing explicit or objectionable, it often deals with mature subjects in a frank and honest way.”

Pat Clark of Manassas has embraced her roles as mom, sister and the quiet and mature Alice.

“[She] copes with life’s changes and ‘firsts.’ Yet, she also explores her wild and crazy side one night while out with the girls – finally appreciating unexpected pleasures that only age and wisdom can provide,” Clark said. “Girlfriends are a gift at any age.”

“A … My Name is Alice” won the Outer Critics’ Circle Award for best musical during the 1983-84 season.

Theatergoers can make an evening out of it by having dinner prior to the show. A special three-course meal for ticket holders is $30 per person at the City Square Caf? across the street.

In the spring, Rooftop will present “Same Time, Next Year,” a play by Bernard Slade about a couple, married to other people, who develop a relationship and become major parts of each other’s lives.
