Manassas Journal Messenger | City officials get pay raise

After the next Manassas Park municipal election in May, the newly elected mayor and respective City Council members will get a slight boost in their paychecks.

A new ordinance adopted by the Manassas Park City Council will increase both the mayor’s and council members’ annual salaries by $1,200 each for fiscal year 2007.

Salaries will also be increased by an additional $1,200 for fiscal year 2008, as stated in the ordinance.

At Tuesday night’s meeting when council members approved the ordinance, council member Noreen C. Slater raised issues with approving salary increases for more than one year.

However, Vice Mayor Kevin P. Brendel noted the increases span from an election year to an election year, making the increases effective until 2008.

Salary increases are determined at the end of one election term so that any given council will not be able to make increases for its current members.

The increases will take effect July 1, according to the ordinance.

The mayor’s salaries for fiscal years 2006, 2007 and 2008 are $8,600, $9,800 and $11,000, respectively.

Council members’ salaries for fiscal years 2006, 2007 and 2008 are $8,000, $9,200 and $10,400, respectively.

However, the ordinance gives the city’s governing body power to establish salaries less than these amounts in accordance with annual budgets.
