Winners:

… Kayla Mock of Manassas, who received first place in color photography for “Bad Taste” in the Woodbridge Campus of Northern Virginia Community College student art contest. The art exhibits will be on display in the Fourth Floor Gallery until April 27. The exhibit includes paintings (acrylic, oil and watercolor), graphics (drawings, prints and mixed media) and photographs.

… Center for the Arts, which is offering the art of basket making, allowing those attending to make their own family heirloom during a two-day workshop on May 10 and 12 from 7 to 9 p.m. Cost to make the hearth basket suitable for holding magazines, knitting supplies or kindling, is $40 plus $18 supply fee.

… The Friends of the Foundation, a local fund-raising group that supports the Prince William Health System Foundation, which is sponsoring its 15th annual golf tournament June 1 at Shenandoah Valley Golf Club in Front Royal. Proceeds will benefit construction of new operating rooms at Prince William Hospital, said Kevin Kelley, chairman. In the past, proceeds have been used to purchase equipment for the hospital’s oncology unit, emergency room, pediatrics unit, construction of the Hylton Family Birthing Center, lobby renovations and a dental program for residents of Annaburg Manor, a skilled nursing home. … The Prince William County Office of Public Safety Communications which was recognized this week as an accredited 911 center by the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services. The center was cited for being able to provide emergency medical instructions to persons calling 911 and needing assistance for an injury or sickness until medical teams arrive on the scene.

… The Prince William Chapter of the American Red Cross which maintains an on-call Disaster Action Team, 24 hours a day, seven days a week for local emergencies, providing assistance at the scene such as food, clothing and shelter as well as referrals to other available community resources. Losers:

… Dog owners who fail to keep their animals under control, allowing them to attack and hurt nearby residents and other dogs.

… Students going off to college who will see tuition and fees increasing to nearly 9 percent in most of the state schools, making an education even more expensive than in the past.
