LYNCHBURG — Phil Dumatrait struck out a season-high eight at City Stadium Wednesday night and Nate Cotton rebounded from a rough outing to pick up his 24th save as the Potomac Cannons defeated the Lynchburg Hillcats, 5-4, to avoid a sweep of a three-game series.
Dumatrait allowed three runs on six hits in six innings in a matchup against Pirates prospect Bryan Bullington to improve to 2-0 for the Cannons.
A night after giving up three runs in the ninth inning of a 10-9 loss, Cotton retired the Hillcats in order to preserve the victory.
Bullington, who gave up four runs in six innings, fell to 4-3.
Cannons second baseman William Bergolla doubled twice, reached base four times and scored two runs. He also stole three bases — giving him 43 for the year. Third baseman Mark Schramek went 2 for 4 and scored a run.
Ryan Doumit went 3 for 3 with a double to lead the Hillcats.? Nate McLouth added two hits to extend his hitting streak to nine games and Walter Young drove in a pair.
The Cannons improved to 19-25 in second-half play but remained six games behind first-place Frederick, which beat Salem, 6-1. The first-half champion Hillcats fell 1? games back at 23-20.
Potomac opens a four-games series in Winston-Salem tonight.
