U.S. News & World Report ranked the University of Richmond 34th among the nation’s liberal arts colleges in this year’s annual college rankings. The Princeton Review also selected UR for this year’s list of “The Best 361 Colleges.”
While school officials say it’s flattering to be included on such prestigious rosters, they say it’s virtually impossible to measure what it really means for the private, 3,400-student university tucked away in Richmond’s West End.
“What it does do is to generate more applications from more people” across the country, said Brian Eckert, UR’s director of media and public relations.
But spotlight aside, making the list doesn’t always mean the school is the best place for a student to attend.
“Most people recommend that students not rely on guidebooks for rankings when it comes to choosing a college,” Eckert said pragmatically. “We advise them to come visit and see if the school is a good fit.”
As he and other experts noted, a school ranked No. 1 may be a great place. But you want to make sure it’s a good place for you.
