Get your lawn ready for fall

A Fall Lawn Care Seminar will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday where Master Gardeners and Prince William Cooperative Extension staff will provide research based on information on lawn fertilization, weed identification and control, soil testing, overseeding and aeration.

There will also be a hands-on demonstration on how to make a Hypertufa container (kits will be available), kids activities, and tips on perennials and vegetable gardening.

The seminar will be at the Teaching Garden at St. Benedict Monastery, behind Linton Hall School, 9535 Linton Hall Road, Bristow. No registration is required for the free event. For more information, call (703) 792-7747.

Non-native English speakers can improve their language skills at the Manassas campus of Northern Virginia Community College’s English as a Second Language program which covers everything from basic literacy to college preparation.

Credit courses start with ESL 2 which provides intensive instruction and practice through listening and speaking exercises. ESL 5 and ESL 6 improve reading comprehensive and vocabulary development. ESL 7 focuses on oral communication to help students function successfully in academic, professional and personal settings.

ESL 11, 12 and 13 develop writing skills, toward the goal of preparing students for college-level composition. Advanced oral communication and reading classes are also offered.

Non-credit courses cover basic literacy, oral communication, conversation, reading and writing, grammar and composition, study skills and more. Both courses begin the week of Sept. 6. To learn more, call Heidi Adamson at (703) 257-6530.
