The Manassas Park City Council is seeking resumes to fill the unexpired term of School Board member Vicki Augustine, who is resigning after serving four years on the board.

Augustine will be moving to a new home in Warrenton, leaving the appointed position vacant as of Aug. 21.

All five School Board members are appointed by the Manassas Park City Council to serve three-year terms. Augustine was appointed and began to serve her term in July 1999. Last year, Augustine was re-appointed to serve a second three-year term on the board.

Augustine’s term expires July 2005.

Following a review of resumes, a public hearing will be held before the council votes, according to Lana Conner, Manassas Park city clerk. For those interested in sending resumes, contact Conner at (703) 335-8808.

Augustine, 42, fondly looks back on the four years she’s served on the board.

“It’s an experience I’ll always remember and I’ll just cherish the experience,” Augustine said. “It’s given me the opportunity to work with the most wonderful people in education.”

The Augustine family moved to Manassas Park eight years ago. Augustine began volunteering with Manassas Park Elementary School’s PTO. She served as PTO president for one year prior to coming to the board.

Serving as a School Board member has included attending meetings, planning and executing a yearly budget and working with city council members.

“Basically you set the policies,” Augustine said.

“She’s been a superb School Board member,” said School Board Chairman Frank Jones, noting Augustine focuses on students coming first. “We’re certainly sorry to see her leave.”

Augustine calls herself a “stay home mom,” and has not worked outside the home for the past 12 years. Augustine is married with a rising third-grader and rising seventh-grader. Both attended Manassas Park schools.

Once the Augustine family moves to Warrenton, her two children will attend Fauquier County schools. Augustine believes it’s important for parents to get involved with their child’s education, she said.

“I probably will participate in some way,” Augustine said. “If not on the School Board, in some way I will definitely be involved with the schools.”
