Man hit, killed by train in area

A man was killed Thursday morning when he was hit by a train near the air field at Quantico Marine Corps Base, said Sgt. Kim Chinn, Prince William police spokeswoman.

The trian concuctor told police, the man was walking on the railroad ties at the outside of the track with his back to the train, Chinn said.

“The conductor blew the whistle and the guy didn’t react,” Chinn said.

The train struck the man a glancing blow, Chinn said.

“The train hit him and he flew in the air about fifty yards,” Chinn said.

Quantico police initially responded the to accident at about 8:20, but ceded the investigation to Prince William police around 9:30, Chinn said.

Police have tentatively identified the man, but are withholding his name pending family notification, Chinn said.

The incident occurred after rush hour and did not affect commuter train schedules said Mark Roeber, Virginia Railway Express spokesman.
