Company to build offices near city

R.W. Murray Co., a general contractor based in Chantilly, is building an office complex near Manassas that will include its corporate headquarters and 25,000 square feet of office space for lease.

The building, called Battlefield Overlook, will sit on Balls Ford Road near Interstate 66. The project represents an investment of about $5 million and is set to be completed in May.

R.W. Murray is currently based in leased space in Chantilly. The new headquarters will give them considerably more room and space to grow, said company spokeswoman Kasha Laiks.

All of the company’s 32 employees will be relocated to the Manassas-area facility.

A major factor in R.W. Murray Co.’s decision to build in Prince William was the county’s fast permit process and amenities, company president Bill Fairchild said in a written statement.

Plus, the company has roots in the county. More than half of R.W. Murray workers, including Fairchild, already live in Prince William, and a large chunk of company’s business is in the area, Laiks said.

Battlefield Overlook I will be a total of 35,000 square feet, and R.W. Murray will occupy 10,000 square feet. The remaining space will be leased, and will suitable for any business that needs Class A office space.

Sean T. Connaughton, chairman of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors, said he is confident R.W. Murray’s building will attract high-quality businesses.

“There’s potential for Battlefield Overlook II and III,” Laiks said.

R.W. Murray was founded in 1959 in St. Louis, Mo., and opened a regional office in Chantilly in 1987. When the founder retired in 1992, he sold the company to Fairchild, who was then the regional manager of the Chantilly office.

The company does work all over the metropolitan Washington, D.C., area, with an emphasis on industrial and warehouse space and high-end office renovations.

Current projects include renovations of Koons of Manassas and the Dominion Valley sports pavilion and activity center near Haymarket.

R.W. Murray has done projects for Circuit City, Peterson Cos. and Inova Health System.
