Scam artist seen soliciting money

A man claiming to represent the Woodbridge High School boy’s lacrosse team has been fraudulently soliciting money in West Ridge, said Benjamin S. Wood, the school’s director of safety and security.

The solicitor told people he was raising the money to help send the team to “nationals,” Wood said.

The solicitation has not been authorized by the high school, said Wood, a retired Prince William police officer.

A suspicious neighbor in the area called the school to report the man, Wood said.

“I had a citizen call me to verify this person’s credibility,” said Wood.

“[The caller] said he recognized him [the solicitor] because he had seen him soliciting before for something entirely different,” Wood said of his conversation with the West Ridge resident.

The caller told Wood the man who was soliciting was in his 30s and white, Wood said.

Wood forwarded information of the fraudulent activity to the police and asks that any other victims of the scam call the Prince William Police Department.
