Manassas man dies in police chase

A 28-year-old Manassas man died in a motorcycle accident at about 3 p.m. Monday during a police chase in Fairfax County, said a recent police department press release.

Police said Chekandio Williams, of 7400 Barbados Lane, died after he hit a Fairfax police officer who was writing a ticket on the shoulder of Fairfax County Parkway.

Williams was eluding another officer at the time of the accident, police said.

Officer Timothy Judd tried to stop Williams, who was speeding south on the Fairfax County Parkway toward the Burke Centre Parkway, the release said.

Police said Williams refused to stop, made a U-Turn on Fairfax County Parkway and headed north.

Williams drove the 2002 Yamaha motorcycle to the shoulder of the parkway just north of Nomes Court, where Fairfax police Officer Kevin Turney was issuing a summons to the driver of a Ford Escape, the release said.

Williams hit Turney with the motorcycle, then slammed into the back of the Ford SUV, the release said.

Turney was taken by helicopter to Inova Fairfax Hospital and was treated for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. Williams was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said.
