Youths qualify for Teen Masters
The Teen Masters Tournament, sponsored by Storm Bowling Products, The American Bowling Congress, NXT Bowling and Kegel, had 62 highly skilled youth bowlers from twelve states participating in this qualifying event.
Bolosan rolled games of 239, 213, 192, 226, 164, 173, 223, 194 and 197 for a 9-game total pinfall of 1821. Bolosan averaged 202.2 for his grueling 9-games.
Following the qualifying round, the highest 16 bowlers advanced to the match play event.
Bivens sent the 16th, 9th, 5th and 3rd seeded athletes in match play to the sidelines .
Bolosan and Bivens earned an invitation to participate in the Teen Masters Championship Finals next March in Lake Wales, Fla., to compete for the title of Teen Masters Champion and a $10,000 scholarship award.
MCNEIL CAPTURES 600 CLUB
FALL SINGLES TITLE
William McNeil, age 15, of Washington, D.C., a sophomore at Surrattsville High School, bowled a three-game series of 609 to win the VIR-MAR-DISTRICT 600 Club Fall Singles Tournament conducted at Bowl America Gaithersburg (Md.) on Nov. 17.
High games rolled: Mike Marisco, 224, in game 1; Patrick Jeffries, 210, in game 2; and Howard Ball, 203, in game 3.
Other youth bowlers finishing in the top five: Dan Massie, 15, Annandale, Va., a sophomore at Annandale High School, 582, 2nd place; Chris Merrill, 19, Woodbridge, Va., a graduate of Gar-Field High School, 578, 3rd place; Mike Marisco, 16, Owings, Md., a junior at Northern High School, 569, 4th place; and Dan Sforza, 15, of Chantilly, Va., a sophomore at Westfield High School, 565, 5th place.
The top five youth bowlers in this event qualified for the annual Tournament of Champions which will be held towards the end of the 2002-2003 season.
Any youth bowler who has rolled a sanctioned 600 series in the VIR-MAR-DISTRICT Association of the Young American Bowling Alliance is eligible for membership in the 600 Club. For more information, telephone the 600 Club Director at (540) 659-1263.
WORKMAN WINS 3RD TITLE
AT AMF SEMINARY LANES
Ron Workman of Waldorf, Md., climbed the stepladder from his fifth seeded position in the Baltimore-Washington Region National Amateur Bowlers (NABI) Tournament held at AMF Seminary Lanes, Alexandria, Va., Nov. 16-17, to earn his third career title.
It took a handicap series score of 654 or higher in the semifinals for the top five bowlers to advance to the finals.
In match 1 of the stepladder finals, Workman defeated fourth seeded Joseph Ward IV, Forestville, Md., 221-202. Ward picked-up $100 for his 5th place finish. Workman knocked off third seeded Joseph Gonzales, Waldorf, Md., 202-180, in match 2. Gonzales made $125 for taking 4th place. Workman beat second seeded Dee Willis, Washington, D.C., 204-194, in match 3. Willis went home with the 3rd place check worth $150.
In the championship match, Workman lashed top seeded Nathan McMackle, Jessup, Md., 209-161, and claimed the $500 prize for first place. In addition, Workman received a championship jacket with a paid entry into the 2003 NABI National Tournament of Champions in Las Vegas, Nev., and secured reserved seating to the Tournament of Champions Banquet.
“I’m looking forward to bowling in the 2003 NABI Championships in Las Vegas,” stated Workman. “I’m going to practice more to get my timing just right.”
McMackle collected the $250 runner-up prize.
