The newest addition to the Manassas School division will be more time – for kindergartners that is.

The School Board approved implementing an all-day kindergarten program in all five of its elementary schools, beginning fall 2003. The shift will be from separate morning and afternoon programs to an all-day one.

Parents still have the option to enroll students in a morning-only program if they choose.

With an estimated $68 million overall budget, Manassas School superintendent Chip Zullinger oversees a broad and comprehensive program that includes federal early childhood (including Head Start), a strong gifted program and advanced placement at the high school level, as well as wide access to technology in classrooms and laboratories in each school.

The high school, middle school, five elementary schools and alternative school in the district currently show a projected 6,779 students fall 2003 – roughly a 1-percent increase over last year.

All seven schools were fully accredited by the Virginia Department of Education during the 2002-03 school year. This means each school had 70 percent or more of its students pass state tests in math, science, social studies and English.

In June 2002, the School Board approved a Strategic Plan for the school system designed to reform and improve all the schools and increase student achievement. It will take approximately five more years to implement the full plan.
