… Jordan Schneider, who has befriended a 51-year-old Vietnam veteran down on his luck. The veteran lost his lease at the West Gate Apartments in May and has been living in his car ever since. Schneider is hoping to find him a place to live. The veteran has diabetes and lost one of his kidneys to cancer but still works as a day laborer. His pet dog of 16 years recently died. Anyone who has an available living space can contact Schneider at (571) 259-4624.

… Central Community Library, which hosts an adult science fiction book discussion on the third Saturday of each month. The title under discussion Sept. 17 will be “Crystal Singer” by Anne McCaffrey. Read the book and discuss it with other readers at 2:30 p.m. No registration is required and refreshments will be provided.

… Prince William Office of Virginia Cooperative Extension, which is offering a six-week discussion group, “Systematic Training for Effective Parenting,” for parents and others who want to learn more effective ways to communicate and discipline. It is offered for three separate age groups: parents of young children (birth to age 5); parents of school-age children (ages six to 12); and parents of teenagers (ages 13 and up). The cost is $40. … The Manassas Warrenton Camera Club, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary. The club was officially formed the first Thursday in September 1985. As part of its 20th anniversary plans, the club has a “Traveling Photography Show” which is part of the club’s educational outreach program. The show includes examples of a variety of photographic techniques and themes. The show will be at Central Library from Sept. 2-30 and Chinn Park Library from Oct. 3-31.

Losers

… Shoppers going to grocery stores or home improvement centers and leaving their empty carts in the parking lot rather than in a designated storage area, making it difficult for a driver pulling into a parking space.

… Motorists who are being detoured off Interstate 66 as construction is ongoing to widen a 3.9-mile portion of the highway. Traffic delays can be expected.
